Deck Makeover After

Deck Makeover – Part II

October 4, 2013 by Babita

Last Updated on June 1, 2018 by Babita

Finally after working for two weekends our Deck Makeover project is complete. It took my husband and I approximately 4 days to complete it. I know if we had used a professional it would have been over in a couple of hours, but I am not complaining because it was a great learning experience.

Check out below the before picture of the our deck. It was due a makeover last year and we finally decided to do it this year before winter.

Deck Makeover 1

In my previous post Deck Makeover – Part I, I was worried about using the semi-transparent stain. To recap, I was not happy with the result of the Behr’s semi-transparent stain Cedar Naturaltone. I had sample tested on small portion of the deck and did not like the color at all. After reading all of your views and opinions I thought it best to opt for a solid stain. So I chose Behr Premium Weatherproofing Solid stain in California Rustic color (My hubby leaves all the color selection up to me. Seems like he does not want to get in trouble with the wrong choice).

One weekend we did the railings with the Behr Premium in Navajo White color and had to stop because of the rain. Thankfully the next weekend we were able to finish off the floor, stairs and all the columns of the deck. Check out the final results of the Deck Makeover and let me know how it is (the good, the bad, the ugly—don’t worry I won’t feel bad with the bad and ugly comments :- ).

Hi! What was the name of the white you used on the railings? I just painted by deck that same California rustic and want to do a white railing. Thanks!

Hi Natassja. I used Behr Premium in Navajo White for the railings. Thanks for asking and I updated the post too.

The color combination looks awesome. I’m thinking of choosing the same colors for my deck. The white color is base white or off white ? Also our current solid paint which is 2 yrs old is slowly peeling at few spots. What should we do to prevent this when we repaint the deck ? TIA

Paint it with clear deck sealer and if possible repeat every two years.
