Diya Luminaires for Diwali

October 24, 2011 by Babita

Last Updated on January 20, 2016 by Babita

I was so occupied with Halloween that I totally overlooked Diwali and all the preparations that go along with it.  While  putting up the lights yesterday I suddenly realized I was supposed to finish my Diya Luminaires project. Mostly, not always on Diwali it has been exceptionally windy over here in NJ. So this time  as a precaution I made this luminaire which will cover the traditional diya in case it turns out to be a windy night.

Remember this piece of aluminum?  I found it in Home Depot. Sometimes I like to use unusual materials for my projects and this one caught my eye. It reminded me of a gathered skirt. Anyway, once I got home I quickly got to work on it. I hammered it and flattened it.

Metal Sheet

I don’t remember what size of the drill bit I used, but I made several holes on the flattened sheet.

I spray painted it with metallic purple and blue paint and allowed them to dry between coats. I applied, I think 2-3 coats. Don’t they look gorgeous?

Metal Sheeting

Once the paint had dried completely, I rolled them over a bottle to shape them. Secured them with jewelry wire in the back through the holes I had drilled earlier.

Diya Luminaires

and here it is….I photographed the above with the lights on and the below without the lights and I would like to finish this post with a big shout out to all my family and friends….HAPPY DIWALI !!!

Note: Kids please do not attempt to do this project, especially with the drill. I had to learn the hard way and ended up with few scrapes on my hands.

Spread the love
