Fabric Covered Wooden Bead Refrigerator Magnets

January 27, 2014 by Babita

Last Updated on January 29, 2014 by Babita

Last year my brother got two wooden beaded necklaces from Indonesia. Now I am not a necklace person so I left it on my dresser and forgot about it. Last Friday I had this idea to make some magnets with fabric scraps and was looking for something to use as a base. I remembered I had these necklaces and decided to use the largest wooden beads as the base for the magnets. Check out my  project and be honest and let me know what you think of the fabric wooden bead refrigerator magnets.

The first thing is I did was cut off the largest wooden beads. They were around 1 3/4″ in diameter, and I felt like it was good enough size for the magnets. I cut out six of those beads.

Wooden Flat Beads

The next thing I did was cut out different fabric circles from the scraps I already had from my previous projects. I did not exactly measure but the fabric circles were approx.  2  1/2″ in diameter.

Fabric Circles

I took the one of the fabric circles and placed the wooden bead on the wrong side of the fabric. I applied some industrial strength glue directly on the wooden bead. Slowly I folded the fabric over the bead. This part was a tricky and required some serious manipulation. But I did it.

I wanted the the back of the fabric covered beads, to look all neat and nice. So I cut out some 1″ red felt circles to cover them.

felt circles

I glued one felt circle to cover the back of bead and I was able to make it all pretty and nice on the back.

I followed the same steps with rest of the five. I allowed about 20-25 minutes for the glue to set in. Finally I cut out some strips of Peel and Stick Magnetic Strips. The glue on these magnetic strips was not strong enough to hold on to the fabric so I added an additional layer of glue and attached it to the back of the beads. I weighted it down with some heavy books.

That is it. It is a very simple and easy project. I used everything I had around the house to make them. I did not have to buy anything specifically for this project.

My daughters  loved it, and “TEE” wanted me to make some more for her so that she can use it in her school locker.

those are awesome! I am not very crafty – it would never occur to me to take apart a necklace to make those (and you did a great job getting the fabric on the backs to look nice!)

Very cool idea! I’m not a necklace wearer either, unless it’s a very, very light necklace – and then I’m afraid one of the kids will break it, so I don’t usually wear it even then. 😛
