Fried Spanish Mackerel

Fried Spanish Mackerel

May 23, 2015 by Babita

Last Updated on May 23, 2015 by Babita

Fried Spanish Mackerel is a recipe that is totally my moms’. It is for mackerel in general and not specifically for Spanish Mackerel. I have to give her the whole credit for it. Mackerel is my favorite fish and it is known as Bangudhe in my language. Growing up my mom used to make it all the time. I remember returning from school and instantly getting the aroma of fried mackerel. That is it, it used to make my day.

However, the mackerel that we get in the Bombay (Mumbai) are not available here. I instead make do with the Spanish mackerel, which is from the same family but bigger in size. The taste profile is also similar. Since it has a very fishy smell, I don’t think it is for everyone. I am a seafood fanatic (check out my other seafood recipes), so I really don’t mind it.

Like I mentioned before this is my mom’s classic recipe. I don’t make it all the time because I try to avoid fried food. Once in a while I treat my kids and DH, and when I do that TEE and ‘S’ literally do the happy dance (they love it so much). The recipe for Fried Spanish Mackerel is very easy. You don’t need tons of ingredients. The texture is amazing… it is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. You can serve them either as an appetizer or on the side during meals. Enjoy!!!

Fried Spanish Mackerel

Ingredients:

2 Spanish Mackerels (cut into 1/2″ or 3/4″ pieces)
2 tbsp chili powder
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp cornflour
salt as per taste
canola oil for frying

Preparations:

  • In a mixing bowl combine chili powder, lemon juice, salt and cornflour. Mix them properly to form a paste.
  • Add some water if the paste is too thick.
  • Coat all the mackerel pieces with this mixture. Allow the pieces to marinate for at least an hour.
  • Heat Canola oil in kadhai or a deep fryer.
  • Deep fry all the pieces until done. Serve with lemons on the side.

Useful Suggestions:

  • For those who don’t like it spicy, you can substitute it Kashmiri chili powder. This chili powder isn’t as spicy, but it adds a wonderful red color.

I’d add the powder for the color. I’d like it even more if it had a little kick.
