Green Masala Shrimp Curry | Hariyali Prawn Curry

Green Masala Shrimp Curry, is a refreshing recipe. It is refreshing because the base of the curry is made with green herbs like cilantro (coriander leaves) and mint.

Green Masala Shrimp Curry in a White Bowl and Rice on the Side

This recipe is not a traditional Mangalorean recipe. My mom used to make it occasionally and when she did, we loved it because it was so different from the coconut curries she usually did.

I like to make this recipe, especially during Summertime. The sweetness of the shrimp with the mildly spicy herbaceous curry is a perfect combination and goes well with rice, rice-based items (dosa or noodles) and white bread. You can also pair it up with chappati (roti) like my husband does.

Green Masala Shrimp Curry | Hariyali Prawn Curry

Ingredients:

2 lbs shrimp
2 cups coriander leaves
1/2 cups mint
1 green chili
1″ piece of chopped ginger
2 big cloves of garlic
1/2 cup fresh/frozen grated coconut
1 big onion
1 tomato
1 tsp dried tiny shrimp (optional)
2 Bay leaves
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp cloves
1/4 tsp turmeric
salt as per taste
oil for sauteing

Preparations:

  • In a blender add coriander leaves, mint, 1/2 onion, garlic, ginger, green chili, coconut, tomatoes, black pepper, cloves, salt and blend/grind to a smooth paste (green masala).
  • Heat a saucepan or stockpot and once the oil is hot add bay leaves and the other 1/2 of chopped onion. Saute it for a minute until the onions are lightly browned.
  • Add the above green masala paste to the onions and saute it for 2 mins more.
  • Next add two and 1/2 cups of water (or more if desired) and dried shrimp and bring the curry to a boil.
  • When it starts bubbling, add the shrimp and cook for 7 to ten minutes.
  • Take off heat and set aside.
  • Serve hot with rice or bread.

Notes:

For this recipe of Green Masala Shrimp Curry, you can use any kind of shrimp; small or large. If you check the recipe you will see, I also use dried tiny shrimps to add a stronger shrimp flavor. The shrimp that we get here is mostly farm-raised. In India, we made this recipe with wild shrimp from the ocean. The flavor profile of those shrimps is different from farm-raised shrimp. They have a stronger aroma and sweet taste of the ocean if you know what I mean.  Using dried shrimps is totally optional. However, if you are looking to buy it,  you can check out Asian stores.

Spread the love
