"Butterscotch Cupcake"

Our Misadventures with Cupcake and Brownie Photo Contest

April 30, 2013 by Babita

Last Updated on April 30, 2013 by Babita

“T” has been participating in a photography contest sponsored by our local library for few years now. This year my little one was officially eligible too, so she was excited to enter the contest. I had promised both of them I would bake some dessert, something that they individually could photograph. I had 4 months to do that, but the moment never came as the procrastinating little devil in me never allowed it. As the deadline approached, all three of us readily gave up on the contest.

The deadline was last Friday and on the morning of Thursday, I realized I could not give up. After all what kind of example was I setting for my girls? In that space of time I decided I would make it work. So after picking up “T” from her school, I directly drove to Shop & Stop and stopped over at the Bakery department. I asked her to take as many pictures as she could with my iPhone. It was difficult because the best looking ones were behind the sneeze guard. Anyway she did manage to get a few good ones. Check out her picture of the butterscotch cupcakes.

Before leaving the store I picked up some ready-made brownies for my little one to photograph. After I came home, I set it up on the plate, over the table and gave the Nikon D40 to “S” to use. By this time all the natural light had disappeared and I knew it was too late to do anything. So I told her to go ahead. Now imagine this; the camera was too heavy for her to handle, so I asked her to hang it around her neck and she happily proceeded to click as many shots as possible. Watching her take the pictures was amusing as I saw her struggling with the weight of the camera. What I did notice about her was her seriousness and her focus (which usually she has trouble with). She took shots from all differently angles, climbed over the chair, stood over her little step stool trying really hard to get some good pictures with different perspective. By the time she was done, I could hear her huffing and puffing. I am pretty sure she must have lost about two pounds in those 20 minutes. Check out her image of the brownies. She was pretty satisfied with her photograph and happy grin on her face.

So off I went to Walmart the next day. Got the pictures printed and submitted it just in time. This was definitely a light-bulb moment for me. I humbly reminded myself again not to procrastinate. The stress is simply not worth it.
