TEE’s First Book Review – The Book Thief

February 12, 2014 by Babita

Last Updated on February 13, 2014 by Babita

I am so excited for TEE. The Book Thief is her first book review. She loves to read and very passionate about it. She wanted to start her own blog for book reviews. Since she has tons of homework, I asked her to contribute to my blog until she is ready to start on her own. So here it is, please show her some love (but be honest too).

TEE’s Review in her own words:

The Book Thief

The Book Thief is a beautiful book that describes Nazi Germany during World War II. Death, is the narrator who trails the life and adventures of Liesel Meminger. Liesel is a girl who has seen her brother die and has been given up to foster parents by her mother.  Once she discovers reading she steals books from where ever and when ever she can. However, her life takes on a different turn when a Jew seeks asylum in her foster home. Max Vandenburg (the Jew) changes Liesel’s life forever, when he teaches her that life depends on words.

The ending of this book (which I will not reveal)  takes a surprising turn.  This is where the emotional kick comes in and the part that made me cry. This novel is beautiful and serves as a very good historical fiction piece for kids like me. The author Markus Zusak opens up your perspective on words, life and death. Even though this book is for young adults, I think all adults should read it.

Read below a few sentences from the first chapter:

“Their mother was asleep.
I entered the train.
My feet stepped through the cluttered aisle and my palm was over his mouth in an instant.
No one noticed.
The train galloped on.
Except the girl.

With one eye open, one still in a dream, the book thief also know as Liesel Meminger – could see without question that her younger brother, Werner, was now sideways and dead”.

About the Author:

Mark Zusack lives in Sydney, Australia. His other books include Fighting Ruben Wolfe, Getting the Girl and I am the Messenger. His book, The Book Thief was published back in 2005 and was on New York Times Best Seller Lists.

Thanks for sharing, you always do such a great job with book reviews.. being from Germany and growing up the Nazi scene is a bit scary to me and something we try to hide and not think about… I bet it’s a great book, I can’t make myself read it though, hope you understand.
