Beauty Treatments for Hair – Relevant or Outdated

October 11, 2013 by Babita

Last Updated on October 11, 2013 by Babita

I came across this book while cleaning my office space and it included tons of tips for each and every aspect of our life. I thought it would be wonderful to share some of the tips with all of you. This week I decided to focus on beauty treatments for hair. We all have had our share of ‘Bad Hair Days’. I remember experimenting in my younger days with tons of organic products and natural remedies to get perfect hair (in my case smooth, shiny and soft) . As I was reading through the tips, I found some of them helpful, some weird and some straight away amusing and it brought back tons of memories.:)

Now most of the tips are tailored towards the Indian population so it may feel a bit out of place and outdated, but I feel when it comes to our beauty routine we all have something in common. Right ladies? Most of these tips include items found in our kitchen and that is what makes it so convenient.  Check them out and let me know what you think of these.

  • This one is the most common one. I personally try to do this every week. Massage hair with either warm coconut oil (normal hair) or warm olive/almond oil (thin or falling hair) at night. Apply it liberally into the hair roots and wash them off the next morning.
  • This one promises strong and lustrous hair. Apply a cup of buttermilk into the scalp with fingertips and leave for fifteen minutes. Wash it off thoroughly with warm water. Helps to keep your head cool during the hot summer days.
  • Apply henna paste (made from henna powder, black tea and egg white) not only give it a reddish-orange tint to the hair, but it also acts as a great conditioner and helps in reducing dandruff. I do follow this routine once in 6 months or if I am really lazy once a year. It works really well, but it time consuming.
  • To improve hair growth, apply egg white to the scalp. Let it dry and wash it off with lukewarm water.
  • Avoid too much hairspray, as it tends to make the hair rough, leads to more dandruff and thinning of hair. Use it only for special occasions.
  • For strengthening hair roots and getting rid of dandruff apply lemon juice into the scalp after oiling the hair. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes before washing hair as usual.
  • If after shampooing the hair is too dry apply a mixture of milk and water (1/2 cup of milk and water) and pour over hair. Rinse it thoroughly. The hair will be beautifully soft, shiny and manageable.

Have you ever followed any of these routines or even heard of them before? Do you think these are tips are still relevant today or not?

I am game to try any treatment that will help my hair. Since I am getting older I have been having a problem with thinning hair. Plus my hair is sooo curly it turns into a puff ball.

I’m not sure about all of these hair treatments but I have recently been using Argan oil on my hair and it is making a big difference with regards to the frizz and the texture of my hair. Since I have frizzy and curly hair, I love the way that it makes my hair feel soft and shiny in between shampoos and treatments.

I remember some of these from when I was a teen! We also used to take a lemon and let the juice soak into our wet hair and would give us some lightening and highlites. I know a lot of people who condition with coconut oil.

I have heard of the coconut oil therapy lots, but so far never tried it, because I was scared my hair would be fatty afterwards. Is it going to be or does it get washed out easy?

No Jutta. You have to shampoo is off properly. It washes off.

I think I have heard of all of these and tried some of these back in the 70s. The hair care industry was not what it is today and so people were always looking to improve their hair with every day ingredients.

I’m loving all the tips for dandruff. I have been struggling with that since 5th grade. It’s so annoying. I’m going to look into these remedies to see if I can find some success stories to read! Thanks for sharing!

I have heard of some of those and I think they’re still relevant. I find that most lil tips and tricks that work are ones that have been passed down from one generation to another.

I’m sure a lot of them are still relevant. I might try that milk and water and see if it helps my hair any. As for the henna will have to pass on that one. 🙂

I really need to give my hair a treatment as I just seem to have such trouble with it – I will have to give warm coconut oil a try x

I have heard of one or two of these tips but have never tried them personally. The one where you rub almond oil into your hair and scalp actually sounds like it might work for me–and from what you said-it works for you.

I use coconut oil for so many things and have used it in my hair before. As for the lemon, I heard it will lighten your hair if you put it on and sit in the sun.

Some of those are oldies, but goodies. I get keratin treatments at the salon, so I can only use certain things in my hair.
