Pick Your Own Apples at Battleview Orchards in Freehold, NJ

September 26, 2016 by Babita

Yesterday was a beautiful day. It was perfect, neither hot nor cold. So we decided to go apple picking at a nearby Battleview Orchards. Even though this place is close to us, we had never visited it.

Battleview Orchards Farm and Country Store is owned and operated by Applegate family since 1908. In this farm you have the opportunity to pick your own fruits including different varieties of strawberries, sour cherries, peaches, nectarines, apples and pumpkins.

They also own and operate a country store all year round. However, for this trip we decided to focus only on apple picking and went straight to the orchards. We were surprised to see the amount of people that had come for apple picking. It was packed and even the parking lots were full. We were not expecting it to be so crowded. However, being that it was Sunday, most people like us probably decided to go apple picking.

At the orchards we were directed to park at Area 3 since Area 2 was full. I liked that they had a separate system because of which one area did not end up being very crowded. Once we had parked we went to the section where the staff had placed buckets with paper bags for collecting all the pickings. As you can see below ‘S’ wanted a bucket of her own. In the meantime, my older one TEE did not want to do anything. I so miss her at an age when she was excited about every little thing.

Anyway, once we entered the orchards we found rows upon rows of different varieties of apples. Each of the rows had signs with the names of the apples, so it was easy to identify them.

As per the farm schedule, the apples varieties we had a choice to pick from included Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Jonagold and Empire. It was fun to learn of some of the varieties of apples which I never knew about.

As you can see ‘S’ couldn’t wait to pose for the picture. She particular wanted me to take a picture of her with lots of apples, so she could share it with her cousins in India. Don’t those red apples look tempting. I saw several people just pluck the apples from the trees and eat them right away.

She also wanted to pick the ones that were the farthest from the ground. Off course my husband had to help her out.

In the next picture below, I know some kind of education was going on. I just did not know who was educating whom.

We couldn’t help go crazy with our pickings. After we were done with all the picking we exited the orchards and went to the farm’s weighing and cashier station. We were surprised to find out we had pickedĀ  a total of 20 lbs of apples. Look at all the apples below!! Aren’t they gorgeous? They taste good too.

We had a wonderful time and have vowed we will go back there again soon. We missed the peach picking but will keep an eye out for that next year. In the meantime, I am going to check out some apple recipes. I need to use all of these apples.

Wow. You did pick a lot of apples! Your daughter looked like she had a nice time. I was just thinking what could you make with all the apples she picked? Apple pie, apple tarts, apple sauce perhaps.

We used to go apple picking when my kids were younger and this brought back good memories. I’m making a note of this farm because I’d love to go peach picking next year.

That location is not that close to me–but not all that far either. It has been years since I picked apples off a tree. I would be one of those who immediately started eating one!! 20 pounds is a lot of apples—apple sauce–start with apple sauce!!

This location isn’t all that far from me. We went apple picking last fall for the first time in many years. It was a fun way to spend the day as a family.

Looks like your kids had a fun time and learned new things too. I have always found it enjoyable to go to farms like this. That one apple tree in the picture has so much fruit!
